Curtin University's new circa $350m Super Sciences project will create a state of the art facility for teaching and learning in engineering and health sciences, a new home for the Western Australian School of Mines and their engagement with the resources industry and materials science clients around the world and a new facility to house Curtin's world renowned materials science John de Laeter Centre.
The facility will securely enable research 24/7 in environments with extreme vibration and electromagnetic interference mitigation.
The project also takes the opportunity to redevelop significant portions of campus road, civil and engineering infrastructure and, in doing so, create another prestige entry to campus.
Chris Pratt has led the project's initiation, business case and development since 2021, validating the brief and developing the detailed technical requirements and designs into comprehensive solutions that will remain contemporary and adaptive for more than 50 years.
Complex facilities and complex infrastructure needs a team that are up to the task.
As these types of facilities don't come along too often, forming a team is a challenge in any jurisdiction. This is not an unfamiliar task for Chris. He's done it in Western Australia, South Australian, Victoria, New South Wales and Nez Zealand on numerous occasions and always with success.
The Super Sciences team has proved to be a high performance team.
Chris led the adoption of a documented and contracted disciplined and staged approach to design that facilitated progressive endorsement and level of detail development, again on best practice and benchmarked principles. Designers, users, stakeholders, cost managers and governance knew where they were in design development and design quality throughout the journey.
It is not often in the careers of Curtin University's users and stakeholders that they will experience development of such a complex facility that will have a generational impact to students and research.
Engaging with users and stakeholders had a planned and structured approach that saw them participate planning, functional area development, design fine tuning, operational planning and finally, design endorsement.
The users and stakeholders met the challenges with the project team and the almost unique and certainly visionary brief.
Strategy, documentation, tendering, evaluation and contract award for Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) Services. A comprehensive best practice form of delivery and services to extract best value from the market and set up for project success.
Women’s and Children’s Hospital arose from the merger of the Children’s Hospital in North Adelaide and the Queen Victoria Hospital.
The scope included an onsite co-generation facility, a 30,000m2 six level facility for women’s health and birthing wards and refurbishment for functions such as engineering, laboratories and a new front entrance.
Challenges included interfaces with existing engineering services and working within a very tight operating hospital site. Planning and constructing separations were a constant challenge.
Design was managed on a fast track basis.
